Working together to end domestic violence and abuse.

“Today represents an annual landmark to draw the attention of decision makers, the media, the public, opinion leaders and local authorities to the alarming situation faced by lesbian, gay, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and all those who do not conform to majority sexual and gender norms” www.dayagainsthomophobia.org

Homphobia

Calan DVS recognises that some LGBT people experience domestic abuse and sexual violence but do not come forward for support, this could be because domestic abuse isn’t well recognised in LGBT communities as most media reports are about domestic abuse relates to the experiences of heterosexual women.

The abuser within a same sex relationship uses all the tactics that are recognised in heterosexual relationships such as physical abuse, emotional abuse and  isolation, but they  may also  threaten to ‘out’ the victim to family friends and colleagues as a method of control. The victim then finds it very difficult to leave the relationship due to this added pressure.

We would urge everyone who may recognise that they are in an abusive relationship to contact the Fear free helpline on 0808 80 10 800  or find Calan DVS branch in your area www.calandvs.org.uk

You are not alone.
