Working together to end domestic violence and abuse.

We are delighted to announce that Calan DVS has been recognised for its “innovative” work at the Powys Business Awards.

We were awarded the Social Enterprise/Charity Award, sponsored by Mid Wales Housing, at the awards ceremony held at The Hafren, Newtown, Powys, last Friday.

The charity was praised by judges for its work supporting women and families escaping domestic abuse and for its work in raising awareness within the community.

Receiving the award, Rachael Eagles, our CEO, said: This award is due to the dedication and hard work of the small team of staff, covering a large area 24/7 365 days a year, and to all the victims of domestic abuse who are now brave survivors.

Calan DVS has been providing domestic abuse support services in south Powys since 2014.

In October last year we merged with Radnor Women’s Aid which lead to a streamlined service throughout the area.

In 2016/17, 32 women and 32 children were accommodated in the Brecon refuge and nine women and 15 children at Llandrindod Wells.

It community support projects at Brecon, Ystradgynlais and Llandrindod Wells have supported 146 women and 201 children and a new service for male survivors of domestic abuse has supported four men in the same period.

During this time the charity has extended its children’s services.

Judges said: “The people who work here are dedicated and make a positive impact to the lives of the service users. They are instrumental in changing society/communities attitudes regarding domestic violence.

“They have shown innovation in their approach and their ideas and recognise the need for prevention, not to only offer support for individuals effected, but to change people’s mind-sets, that will hopefully reduce domestic violence for the future.”

The other category finalists were: Powys Dance, Llandrindod Wells and Robert Owen Community Banking Fund, Newtown.
