Working together to end domestic violence and abuse.

Calan Domestic Violence Services is highlighting the issue of increased reporting of domestic abuse that is evident during  times of key sporting events including the Six Nations which is due to start on 1st February 2014.

Increased reporting of incidents is a common feature linked to these events and has seen a steady increase year on year. As a result, over the past few years, key bodies including the Welsh Government and South Wales Police, have introduced specific campaigns designed to highlight the issues.

Police records show that the number of reported incidents of domestic violence increase considerably around the time that the 6 Nations tournament runs.  For example, when Wales played England in 2012, South Wales Police recorded a 76% increase in incidents compared to the previous weekend.

Says Rhian Bowen-Davies, CEO of Calan DVS, “Domestic violence and abuse remains an issue which can have a devastating effect on individuals, children and young people, families and society as a whole.

We encourage anyone who has been threatened with or is experiencing any form of domestic abuse, at any time of the year, not just during the Six Nations tournament, to call us on 01639 633580 for support and information. If you are unsafe always call 999. You can also call the All Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 8010800.”

“You don’t have to live in fear. Support is just a phone call away.”
