In a previous blog we let you know that Calan DVS’s CEO, Rhian Bowen-Davies, had been selected as a mentee for the Women in Public Life Scheme.
The Presiding Officer of the National Assembly for Wales, Dame Rosemary Butler AM, launched the ‘Women in Public Life Development’ scheme in order to help combat the severe under-representation of women in public roles and appointments. Women are often overlooked or unheard because of this under-representation, and this scheme aims to give women the skills and confidence to enter into more public roles and help to achieve a gender balance.
The scheme will provide 15 mentees with training and development to boost their personal skills and confidence to apply for positions in public life, one to one mentoring sessions, as well as role-shadowing opportunities at the highest levels in various public bodies.
The scheme was officially launched on October 9th at the Senedd in Cardiff.
At the launch, the Presiding Officer and the successful mentors and mentees, discussed why women so often discredit themselves and question their abilities within their current profession or when applying for something new, often asking ‘Why me?”. Attendees agreed that this attitude needs to change, and women should be asking “Why NOT me?”
This is an important step to addressing the gender inequality in public roles in Wales and the rest of the UK, which have actually seen a decline in female positions in recent years.
Rhian said, “I am delighted to have the opportunity to be part of this exciting development scheme which recognises the invaluable contribution that women can make to public life in Wales”.
The scheme will also be presenting a series of lectures about women in public life. The latest lecture will be given by Meera Vijayann at the Pierhead in Cardiff Bay on November 20th 2014 at 6pm. Meera will be talking about a woman’s voice in the digital age, and how women can be empowered by the digital era we live in to participate in political, community and governance matters.
