Calan DVS has recently launched an Early Intervention and Prevention Service in partnership with Neath Port Talbot County Borough Council’s Think Family Partnership and Team around the Family.
The project is designed to deliver a specialist early intervention and support service for children, young people and families; focussing on reducing risk, increasing protective factors and building resilience. The project aims to support 150 families during its first year.
This project will aim to increase protective factors surrounding a child or young person by developing strong and positive relationships with parents and other significant adults in their life, as well as providing guidance and support on positive parenting and greater parental interest and involvement in education. By doing this, risk factors surrounding children or young people, such as lack of supervision, family conflict, or poor parenting skills, can be addressed and reduced. The project will also aim to build resilience in young people by helping to improve self-esteem, encouraging positive mental health, engaging in the community, and many other activities.
The service will be available to children and young people aged up to 25 and their families who have experienced domestic abuse. The service offers a range of interventions including 1-2-1 support and family work, group programmes, parenting support, practical support and assistance in the home, as well as having the opportunity to engage with accredited learning schemes across a range of different subjects. There will also be voluntary access programmes available for perpetrators of domestic abuse.
This new service will maximise existing provision of domestic abuse support, and provide a targeted, specialist service for children, young people, and families that takes a wider and holistic approach to addressing experiences and consequences of domestic violence and abuse, allowing children, young people and their families in Neath Port Talbot to feel supported and safe.
If anyone is experiencing domestic violence or abuse, we would encourage them to call Calan DVS for advice and support on 01639 633580, or the 24-hour All Wales Domestic Abuse and Sexual Violence Helpline on 0808 8010800. If anyone is in immediate danger they should always call 999.
